But when I actually tried one, I found it was fun to revisit compositions, colors and themes I'd painted before. Each time, there is variation and improvisation which makes every painting unique, and my clients have been very happy with the results.

Energy is the life force that is present in all good art. This is not something that is easily defined, but it is the opposite state of static flatness. It is this energy that makes a painting speak to you, and makes an artist's work original and identifiable as the work of that artist. Energy is created out of the artist's materials and tools, but the end is more than the means in the same sense that a musical composition is so much more than a collection of notes.
When I told my daughter that I just got a new commission, she asked, "How can you paint abstract art on demand?" It seemed a contradiction to her, since I paint spontaneously and I never know how a painting is going to turn out.
My answer: I can be spontaneous, yet use a particular palette of colors and have a general theme or composition in mind. If a collector likes my work in general, I don't have trouble pleasing them.
Nevertheless, I always paint two canvases in order give the collector a choice. Painting two canvases also relieves me of the pressure to "make sure it comes out great."
I've never had a collector refuse both choices, and often they like them both, even though they can only purchase one.
Often artists who are used to drawing and painting what they see around them have trouble figuring out how to begin making non-representational abstract art. Should they plan what to paint in their heads first? Make a small sketch of the design? Or just plunge in? If so, how?
There is no single way to approach the project, but I often paint a "background" first so that there is something for me to work against or with. The background consists of blending some colors together, so all I need to know is the basic color palette I will use. And during the course of the painting process, this color scheme could change entirely.
I never know how a painting will turn out when I begin. Rather than having a concept or design in my head, I like to let the image emerge from the painting process.
