About my Original Abstract Paintings on Canvas:

All my original abstract paintings on canvas are made with heavy-duty stretchers 1.5 inches thick, with the canvas wrapped around the edges and stapled to the back. The painting itself continues around the edges (sides), so that looking from the side, the painting appears three-dimensional. No framing is required for these canvases, though some of my collectors do add frames to go with a particular decor in their homes.

I paint with acrylic paint in a variety of thicknesses and mixtures. Sometimes I paint directly from a tube of what is called "heavy-body" paint because of its consistency. Other times I mix thinner paints together, adding water and glaze medium to create a translucent effect. Oftentimes I will paint in layers, with colors showing through the translucent top layers. I also love "drawing" with lines in acrylic paint, which I am able to do by attaching a cap to the end of the tube of paint. There is a small hole at the end of the cap which allows me to use the paint as a drawing medium, much like decorating a cake.

My early training in art taught me how to recreate the world I saw around me on paper or canvas by drawing and painting from life. I drew many portraits of my family and painted still-lifes, portraits, and scenes from nature. But my true love is color, form, shape and texture. As I continued with my studies in art education, I experimented more and more with abstraction.

When I was attending Cooper Union in New York City, I fell in love with the abstract expressionists or "action painters": Hans Hoffman, Willem DeKooning, Franz Kline, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and others. I experimented by adding mixtures of turpentine and beeswax to oil paint, mixing paint and collage, and working with large gestures rather than small careful brushstrokes.

At the same time I was experimenting with expressionist painting, I took classes in life-drawing and two-dimensional design. Robert Gwathmey was my drawing teacher, but he is most famous for his fabulous paintings. Two dimensional design helped me to see the power of color and patterns in visual art. One of the pieces I made in that class was hung in the annual student exhibit at Cooper Union at the end of the year.

Everything in my life goes into my painting, but I am directly inspired by music as I paint. You will find me listening to a variety of music, sometimes playing a cd over and over and over for several weeks. Here's a sampling of some of the musicians I like to paint to: Leonard Cohen, Annie DiFranco, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Dave Brubeck, Carlos Nakai, Vicki Genfan, the Rolling Stones, Laurie Anderson, Buddy Holly, Molly MacMillan, Chris Isaak . . .. as well as classical piano, flute and violin.

A painting begins in a mood, a color, or an idea, but it gradually develops a life of its own. At that point I become in tune with what the painting needs, working until I know it is done. Often this takes many painting sessions and sometimes a lot of staring to figure out what the painting needs. There is no satisfaction like having all the colors, shapes, lines, patterns and textures finally come together in that "Aha!" moment of completion.
