Selecting Paintings for an Exhibition (excerpt from my Abstract Art Blog)

It's always a challenge to choose paintings for an exhibition, because you want to select art that will work in the gallery space and also work well together. I found it particularly difficult recently when I had to pick three paintings for a group show at Monkdogz Urban Art in New York City . I wanted the paintings to be as large as possible, and I wanted them to be from my latest work.

Bob Hogge, director of the gallery, said that 48" x 48" should be the largest size I use because of the necessity to get all eight artists' work hung. He also said he preferred that I don't send my black-and-white paintings, since most of my work is in bright colors. These restrictions were fine, except that I'd just finished a number of 60" x 60" paintings, and a number of black-and-white paintings. These were some of my favorites from my most recent work.

I could have chosen three smaller paintings, as then I'd have a number to choose from that would work well together. But I wanted to send the largest ones I could, so that limited my choices. Most of the 48" x 48" paintings I'd had in stock had been sold. But I did have some brand-new paintings that I liked.

After assembling a group of five possible paintings, Adrian weighed in with his opinion, and then I got another opinion from Stan Bowman, an artist friend of mine. Stan pretty much agreed with me on the three that worked best together, so I made my final choice:

Life Story, 44" x 44"

Green Box, 44" x 44"

Fault Line, 48" x 48"

I grew up in Newark, New Jersey until we moved to Irvington when I was in the third grade. From the time I can remember I was always making some kind of art, from sculpting homemade play dough to holiday decorations and craft projects . . . MORE
